Every week the GoMason Blog will run entries from players and coaches of in-season sports. Kicking things off is a men’s soccer blog written by senior Fro Adu. Adu came to Mason from Georgetown Prep and he will be playing in his 60th match on Tuesday night when the Patriots travel to seventh-ranked Maryland. In coming weeks, look for men’s soccer player blogs every Wednesday.
Now here’s Fro’s take on last week’s match against Richmond and this week’s matches at Maryland and Old Dominion.
“In our home season opener against Richmond we knew that we could not underestimate them. We knew they would be a challenging side because they are coached by our former assistant coach Clint Peay, and he is an excellent coach. The atmosphere for the game was electrifying, and it felt great seeing Doc Nix and The Green Machine providing energetic music for the many fans that came. We had our game plan during our scouting report, and when the whistle blew, we tried to execute. In all we started the game off well, but our high level dropped somewhat after the first goal. We came back to form to score the second goal to end the half at 2-0. Unfortunately we started the second half very slowly and they scored in about 7 minutes or so. That definitely woke us up and we tightened up our defense. The second half was not pretty but we won the game.
“Now we play Maryland and all the boys are looking forward to that game. We know they will come at us with their full arsenal because we won 2-0 last year. Everybody gave their all during that game, and we gave the amazing crowd an electrifying game to watch. This year we are even more dynamic, stronger, and we are a faster team. With the depth in players we have, we are ready to challenge ourselves again against the No. 7 ranked team in the nation. A lot of Mason students are going to make that drive through traffic to come and show their support, and the team is more than ready to give them a great game. We want to win this game so we have a great start heading into our conference play against Old Dominion this Saturday, September 25.
“We lost to ODU 1-0 last year during Senior Night, and it’s one game I don’t like thinking about. They came to our field and left as winners. Simply put, we are on a mission to go to their home field and do our best to return the favor. They are a very good side, but so are we. It will certainly be a great game, and I’m looking forward to the long bus ride back from their field knowing we gave our all. I already have my playlist set up for the ride back. Lupe Fiasco anybody?”
Mason and Maryland kick off at 7:30 p.m. It’s safe to say that a pair of wins this week will put the Patriots on the cusp of the top 25, if not firmly in it.
