Last Saturday night, the men’s soccer team suffered a difficult loss as they fell to VCU 1-0. The Rams scored in the final 10 minutes in a match that Mason controlled for most of the night. This week, the Patriots (4-3-1, 0-1-1) get back on the pitch with a match tonight at Drexel (4-4-2, 0-2-0), then a home match on Saturday against William & Mary (5-2-1, 1-1-1). Junior midfielder Ryan Gracia writes this week’s player blog.
“Tomorrow is a new day.
“Going 0-1-1 was not the start to CAA competition that we were hoping for but if we can put all that in the past and move on things can turn around very quickly for us. We have a lot of talent this year and by continually working hard and believing, we know that good results will come for us.
“In my three years of being at Mason, VCU has always been a really tough opponent to play against. Last year we were able to come away with a close win on their home field and unfortunately things were the opposite this time around. While we out-possessed them throughout the game, they were able to get the ball in the exact place that they wanted it with the game nearing the end and a well-struck shot gave them the victory. A very upsetting way to end that game, but with so many games in such a short period of time, the only thing to do now is move on.
“Tomorrow’s game against Drexel could be a real turning point for us. They are a hard-nosed team that will scrap against us, but if we can bring that same toughness they bring to go along with our skill, we should be ready for the challenge. Philadelphia is always a difficult place to play and playing on Drexel’s turf field won’t make things any easier. Get ready for a good, hard game of soccer.
“Ending the week at home against William and Mary will be fun. They lost at Old Dominion in the first CAA game of the season, 1-0, and after we battled ODU to a 0-0 draw, we should probably expect the same thing from them as we got from ODU. Nothing is going to be easy this year. Every team has a chance to do well and our skill level, competitiveness, and toughness should help us go a long way this year.”
